Spanish-American War (European-American history, 1898) | ||
Note: War between Spain and the United States that was fought both in the Caribbean and in the Pacific Ocean, initially instigated by anti-Spanish sentiment in Cuba. The war was brief, with the United States defeating Spain. The Treaty of Paris was signed in late 1898, which ended Spanish colonial rule in Cuba, transferred the Philippines to the United States for $20 million, and ceded both Puerto Rico and Guam. | |
