Battle of Fort Sumter (American Civil War battle, 1861)

Note: The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Ameican Civil War, waged at the fort located on the man-made island at the entrance to the harbour of Charleston, South Carolina. In the months preceding the battle, the seven Confederate States that sececded from the Union claimed posession of all U.S. Fort within their territory. At the time of the conflict, the fort, begun in 1829, was uncompleted, but was garrisoned by U.S. troops under Major Robert Anderson. The Confederates demanded the immediate evacuation of the fort,and when this was refused, the South opened fire at 4:27 AM on April 12. Major Anderson was forced to surrender and on April 14, Fort Sumter was evacuated by federal troops.
