Note: Contest of supernatural powers between Sariputra and Raudraksa. Story appears in numerous Dunhuang manuscripts and canonical sutras; it narrates the founding of the famous monastery garden of Jetavana and the triumph of Buddhism over Brahmanic religions in a battle of supernormal conjuration. Sudatta, a wealthy Buddhist layman. of Śrāvastī (in present-day northern India), convinces Prince Jeta to sell him land for the garden’s construction, inspiring the prince with his magnanimity and devotion. Learning this, a group of waidao, or heretics, in the polemical Buddhist terminology, persuade the king to preside over a face-off between Raudrāks. a, the heretics’ leader, and Śāriputra, one of the Buddha’s chief disciples. | |
