Battle of Antietam (American Civil War battle, 1862)

Note: Decisive engagement in the American Civil War that halted the Confederate advance on Maryland for the purpose of gaining military supplies and threatening Washington, DC; 26,000 casualties. Afterwards, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was forced to retreat to Virginia.
