Life of Saint Catherine of Siena (Christian iconography)

Note: Narratives from the life and miracles of St. Catherine of Siena. She worked to establish peace among the Italian city-states and to bring the papacy under Pope Gregory XI back to Rome from France. She fasted for long intervals; she had celestial visitations, familiar conversation with Christ, and a "spiritual espousal"; she tended the sick, served the poor, preached to sinners. Contemporaries tell of her personal charm even in the face of continual persecution. According to the story, she received the stigmata of Christ, felt their pain, but the marks were invisible while she lived.
