	Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence (Christian iconography)

Note: Episode in the traditional life of St. Lawrence, under the persecution of Valerian in 258 Lawrence was placed on a gridiron to be burned to death; reported by Ambrose (De officiis). In like manner, but with more poetical detail, Prudentius describes the martyrdom in his hymn on St. Lawrence ("Peristephanon", Hymnus II). The accounts are considered by modern scholars to be legendary, not factual.
