Christopher, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Legendary saint and martyr, patron of travelers; in the story, he was of large stature, converted to Christianity, and carried people across a river as an act of good will for Christ's sake. The legend places his martyrdom alternatively during the reign of Emperor Decius (reigned 249-251) or Maximinus II Dacian (reigned 308-313). He may have been confused with the Egyptian Saint Menas. In Eastern Orthodox icons, Saint Christopher is sometimes represented with the head of a dog, based on a part of his legend, interpreting the Latin term Cananeus (Canaanite) to read canineus (canine).
