Matthew, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Character in the New Testament who traditionally was a tax collector who became an apostle of Jesus, and held to be the same as the author of the gospel of Matthew. His symbol is the angel who inspired him in writing the gospel. He is mentioned in Matthew 9:9, 10:3 Luke 6:15, and Mark 3:18, 9:9, and 2:14, and Act 1:13. Modern scholars believe the Gospel of Matthew is anonymous: the author is not named within the text, and the superscription "according to Matthew" was added some time in the 2nd century.
