Spanish Inquisition (Spanish judicial tribunal, 1478-1834)

Note: Judicial tribunal in Spain, flourishing primarily in the 15th and 16th centuries, ostensibly established to combat heresy in Spain; established in 1480 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. In practice, the Spanish Inquisition served to consolidate power in the monarchy of the newly unified Spanish kingdom, achieving its goal through infamously brutal methods.
