![]() | Erasmus, Saint, Bishop of Antioch (Christian character)
Note: Legendary and compilation saint, known in the Acts of Saint Elmo, which confuse him with a Syrian bishop Erasmus of Antioch, and in Jacobus de Voragine's "Golden Legend," which calls him bishop at Formia, Italy, a hermit on Mount Lebanon, and a martyr in the persecutions under Eastern Roman Emperor Diocletian. Also known as Elmo, due to a miracle concerning lightening, he was patron of sailors in peril from lightening; the electrical discharges from masts struck by lightening is named for him, Saint Elmo's fire. Historical basis for these stories is lacking.
