Note: The homecoming of the herd as a motif of autumn - unusual for the Netherlands - was reintroduced into painting by Bruegel; can be traced back to the artist's travels through Switzerland. The Almabtrieb (drive from the mountain pasture) is the subject of this scene, placed in a sublime landscape with autumn-toned color and mood.

Die heimkehrende Herde als Motiv des Herbstes - für die Niederlande unüblich - wurde von Bruegel neu in die Malerei eingeführt und könnte auf Eindrücke zurückgehen, die der Künstler auf seiner Reiseroute durch die Schweiz gewonnen hat. Der Almabtrieb als Einschnitt im bäuerlichen Jahr wird hier zur Titelszene, Hauptthema ist aber die ins Erhabene gesteigerte Landschaft in ihrer herbstlich getönten Farbigkeit und Stimmung.
