Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Subject matter features vignettes common to numerous Maitreya paradise tableaux; balancing economy of line with detail, they depict the idyllic conditions of daily life during the coming of this “future buddha.” Examples include a wedding banquet held in a tent, a reference to the women who will marry at the age of five hundred; a man plowing a field without toil; various miracles, including cloth growing from trees; an elderly couple voluntarily entering their own tomb; and a harvesting scene indicative of great bounty.
