Note: Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. This illustrated manuscript attests to an approach to the afterlife,formed in China around the seventh century, founded on a conceptof postmortem spiritual expiation akin to purgatory.1 The sutra,an indigenous Chinese composition, addresses the period beforerebirth when the dead are judged by otherworldly kings in a supernatural analogue to the medieval Chinese bureaucracy.2 In each of these ten courts presides a different magistrate, supervised by King Yama, hegemon of Indic hell. As the sutra reveals, Yama will attain buddhahood in a future life despite his career in retribution. Thus his courts ultimately serve the Mahayana Buddhist purpose of liberation for all sentient beings.
