| Note: Front: Painting of a travelling monk, shown wearing a hat, with a load of scrolls on his back, and fan in left hand. Behind him is a tiger, and in front, a small Buddha supported by a cloud. Ink and colors on paper. Rendered in brisk ink line with orange, russet, and gray coloration,this cloud-borne traveler carries a wooden-frame pack filled withscrolls, his lips parted, perhaps in mid-chant. Surviving in numerousversions at Dunhuang, he has been widely interpreted as amonk transporting sacred texts, an iconic figure in the history ofcultural transfer along the Silk Road. | |
