Tower of London (prison (building); White Tower: buillt by William I, King of England (Norman ki...; construction: 1078-1190, rebu...)
Note: Historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. Founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England, the White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 . Although it was not its primary purpose, the castle’s most notorious identity is as a prison, which it operated from 1100 until 1952. Some of its most famous prisoners include lady Jane Grey, princes Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, Elizabeth I, and the Kray Twins. It has also functioned as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, a public records office, and the home of both The Royal Mint and of the Crown Jewels of England. The Tower is a complex of several buildings inside two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat, with its most distinguishing feature being its tall stone keeps.
