Record Type: Movable Work
Design for the central section of The Mirror of Virtue (drawing (visual work); Cornelis Ketel (Dutch, 1548 - 1616) (Dutch Artist); about 1594; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.65)
Note: The drawing, one of very few surviving sheets securely attributed to Cornelis Ketel, displays his initial design for a complex allegory, described in the early seventeenth century as 'The Mirror of Virtue.' In the form of a sinuously positioned nude female, the figure of Charity sits between Gratitude and Ingratitude. Charity's left leg rests on a lion, who is in turn nuzzled by a dog and aided by a tiny mouse, who attempts to chew through the rope attached to the lion's neck. These animals, all symbols of kindness and generosity, enhance the representation of Charity, who is shown giving away the sun and the moon, each balanced in one of her out-stretched hands. Her impartiality in giving away such precious gifts is suggested by the statue placed in the niche on the wall behind the central group of figures. Gratitude, another nude female figure, receives the moon extended in Charity's left hand. Behind the figure of Gratitude, one sees confirmation of her eternal acknowledgement of thanks in the symbol of the obelisk, resonant because of its ancient origins as an object of permanence. At Charity's right stands the figure of Ingratitude, who bites the arm of Charity as he receives from her the sun in its brilliant glory. With his left hand, he stabs Charity's flank; his pernicious and short-lived memory is further emphasized by the feuding snakes wrapped around his thigh and skull on which his left knee rests.
