Baronne de Domecy (pastels (visual works); Odilon Redon (French, 1840 - 1916) (French Artist); about 1900; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2005.1)
Note: Redon executed this pastel portrait of Baronne de Domecy (née Bagneux), the wife of his patron and friend, Baron Robert de Domecy, shortly after he had completed a decorative cycle of eighteen paintings for their dining room at the Château de Domecy in the province of the Yonne. It combines Redon's dual mastery of convincing representation (in the portrait) and of abstraction (in the fanciful floral patterns that surround her form). The pastel medium, and Redon's supreme control of it, allowed him to achieve an overall surface of rich, saturated color, as well as ethereal, almost dream-like effects.
