Portrait Head of an Old Man (sculpture (visual works); Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 25 BCE - CE 10; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AA.39)

Note: This head is an exceptionally fine portrait of an old man from the Augustan period made as a small bust cut just below the neck. The head is depicted in nearly frontal view with a slight turn to the right, reinforced by the direction of the neck's muscles. It has close-cropped hair, rendered with very delicate, short chisel strokes and ridges. The face has a softly modeled surface, emphasizing old age as well expressive maturity, and is covered by a series of fine wrinkles. The eyebrows are thin and long, the small lips are closed and give the face a serious expression.
