Crystal Palace (exhibition buildings; Joseph Paxton (English horticulturist, gardener, and builder...; 1851; Gotha (Thüringen, Deutschland, Europe, World, Top of the ...;)
Note: A massive exhibition pavillion covering over 990,000 square feet (92,000 m) of exhibition space, the Crystal Palace was created out of cast-iron and cast plate-glass to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. Because of the recent invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848, it was, at the time, the largest amount of glass ever seen that did not require interior lighting. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m). Here, visitors marveled at more than 14,000 exhibitors of the latest inventions and the cutting edge of technology, the least of which was the structure itself. After the exhibition was over, it was rebuilt on Penge Peak next to Sydenham Hill, where it remained from 1854 until it was detroyed by fire in 1936. Located in: London, England, United Kingdom
