[Rescue of Arion] (engraving (print); Alfiano, Epifanio d' (engraver, fl. 1591-1607); Published: 1592; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1575-491; 552199; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 206))
Note: Dated 1592 by Saslow; Bastiano de' Rossi, chief secretary of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, described the interludes by Giovanni de' Bardi in Descrizione dell'apparato e degl'intermedi ... (In Firenze : Per Anton Padouani, M.D.LXXXIX [1589]); The print depicts the fifth intermezzo of the comedy La pellegrina performed in the Teatro mediceo degli Uffizi on the evening of May 2, 1589, as part of the festivities honoring the wedding of Ferdinand I de' Medici to Princess Christine of Lorraine; The engraving records Bernardo Buontalenti's stage design for the fifth intermezzo, enacting the rescue of Arion (cf. Plutarch, Moralia). Amphitrite is accompanied by tritons and nymphs swimming in a sea flanked by reefs. Arion rides a dolphin, while the vessel he has been travelling on is depicted on the left. Amphitrite holds a coat of arms, whose shield is party per fess, star and two birds. It differs from the one illustrated by Saslow; Trimmed in the right margin, with loss of plate mark; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).[1592] (34501/publishers)
