Note: Dedicated to the Riminese lawyer Alessandro Gambalunga, the engraving reproduces in reverse Giorgio Vasari's painting known as the Allegory of [the Immaculate] Conception or Allegory of Redemption of which there exist several versions (Florence, Chiesa di SS. Apostoli; Florence, Uffizi, inv. 1524; ...); Forms part of the Leo Steinberg collection of prints (Special Collections accn. no. 2000.PR.16); Accompanied by Leo Steinberg's handwritten notes concerning bibliography, iconography and biblical sources of theme. [Depicts Adam, Eve, Moses, kings, priests and soldiers all tethered to the bottom of a fig tree, around which the serpent as fallen angel is coiled. Over the tree is the Virgin surrounded by angels on a crescent moon.]
