Five figure studies (The desperate man) (print (visual work); Albrecht Dürer (German printmaker and painter, 1471-1528)...; Published: ca. 1515; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 882098; accession number: 2010.PR.92*;)
Note: Without monogram; Title from Albrecht Dürer and his Legacy (2002) and Schoch (2001); The print was described by Bartsch as "Cinq études de figures" in Le peintre-graveur (1808), but it has also been referred to as "The Dismayed Husband" (Hüsgen, 1798), "The Bath" (Heller, 1827) and "The Desperate Man" (von Retberg, 1871; Illustrated Bartsch). The print is titled "Der sogenannte Verzweifelnde" in Meder; The print is generally considered to be the earliest of Dürer's six etchings and may have been an experimental plate in which Dürer incorporated various images. The man on the left bears a resemblance to Dürer's portrait sketch of his brother Endres of 1514 (Vienna, Albertina, SD 1514/31). The sleeping woman at right is reminiscent of Dürer's drawing of a reclining woman next to a drinking fountain (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, SD 1514/36); Panofsky interpreted the etching in relation to Melencolia I (1514), proposing to identify the figures as other forms of melancholy, with the central figure signifying choleric melancholy, the sleeping woman phlegmatic melancholy, and the satyr sanguine melancholy; "K:N. 79"--in ink on verso. Publication: [ca. 1515].
