Note: A related drawing by Bernardo Buontalenti in pen and brown ink, wash with watercolor is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. no. E 1188-1931); Bastiano de' Rossi, chief secretary of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, described the interludes by Giovanni de' Bardi in Descrizione dell'apparato e degl'intermedi ... (In Firenze : Per Anton Padouani, M.D.LXXXIX [1589]); The print depicts the third intermezzo of the comedy La pellegrina performed in the Teatro mediceo degli Uffizi on the evening of May 2, 1589 as part of the festivities honoring the wedding of Ferdinand I de' Medici to Princess Christine of Lorraine; It records in reverse Bernardo Buontalenti's stage design for the third intermezzo enacting the combat between Apollo and the Python (cf. Ovid, Metamorphoses, I). The stage setting is composed of a glade in a densely wooded landscape, where the Python is surrounded by Delphian women and men conversing in an animated manner. Apollo, seen in a foreshortened pose, swoops down from the sky upon the dragon, sword in hand; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**); Annotated in ink: Maggioni comprò a Bologna / nel 1790. Ink stamp on verso: GV with an oval between the letters and an inventory number in pencil (4404); Library has other impressions (state 1, state 2) that form part of the Italian Theater Collection: accn. no.
