Arch of Constantine (triumphal arch (memorial arch); Constantine I, Emperor of Rome (Roman emperor, 285-337 CE); 315 CE; Rome (Roma, Lazio, Italia, Europe, World, Top of the TGN hie...)
Note: Dedicated by the Senate in 315 CE for the tenth anniversary of the emperor's reign, the Arch of Constantine commemorates his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 CE. The monument is noteable for its use of spolia, that is, parts taken from earlier monuments from the reigns of Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and Constantine himself. The panels created specifically for the arch are often cited for their notable breaks in style from the Hellenistic naturalism of the Classic Imperial period. Figures and the space they occupy are no longer shown in normal sizes and proportions as dictated by perspective and depth, but instead by the importance of each person, with the Emperor being the largest of these figures.
