Descriptive Note
|
Text: Six-building hillside complex.
The site is extensively landscaped. Buildings are
clad in cleft-cut Italian travertine and white enamel
panels; campus is organized around a central arrival
plaza. These non-load-bearing slabs have visible joints
and are held in place by stainless steel anchors.
The angular grid of the design is mitigated by curvilinear
design elements and a large garden. The Getty Center
sits on a hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains, just
off the San Diego Freeway. From there, visitors can
take in the disparate aspects of Los Angeles' landscape-the
Pacific Ocean, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the
vast street-grid of the city.
