Naya Studio (Italian photography studio, ca. 1857-1918)
|
Note: Ca. 1857, Carlo Naya, an optical instrument dealer, set up a photographic studio in Venice. In 1868, Carlo Naya opened a photographic shop in Saint Mark's Square, Venice. During the 1870s, Carlo Naya acted as the "producer" of his photographs (deciding on locations, angles, etc.) while his employees actually took and processed the images. During this decade the principal photographer for the firm was Tommaso Filippi. In 1882, upon the death of Carlo Naya, the firm was run by his widow, Ida Lessiak, and managed by Tomasso Filippi. In 1893, Ida Lessiak died and Filippi left the firm to start his own business. The business was then run by Lessiak's second husband Antonio dal Zotto. In 1918, dal Zotto died and the firm ceased all business activities. The archive was bought and preserved by the publisher Osvaldo Böhm in 1920. |
