Davis, Theodore Montgomery (American lawyer, businessman, and collector, 1837-1915)
|
Note: Theodore M. Davis, born May 7, 1838, was an attorney who also owned copper mines, who is best known for his excavations in Egypt's Valley of the Kings between 1902 and 1914. He moved to Rhode Island in 1882 and built a mansion known as "The Reef" on Ocean Ave. He bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum a collection that included paintings, Egyptian and Classical antiquities, sculpture, and European and Near Eastern decorative arts. The bequest was in litigation for fifteen years, and the paintings in the collection were not accessioned until 1930. |
