Gregory XV, Pope (Italian pope, 1554-1623)
|
Note: Child of Pompeo Ludovisi, Count of Samoggia in the Province of Bologna, and Camilla Bianchini; he earned a doctorate in law from the University of Bologna. Gregory’s pontificate achieved two significant reforms: he introduced the secret ballot in papal elections, and he established the first permanent board of control of Roman Catholic foreign missions, the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. |
