Boniface VIII, Pope (Italian pope, ca.1235/1240-1303)
|
Note: Son of Loffred, a descendant of a noble family originally Spanish, but long established in Italy. Pontificate is known for the publication of the third part of the Corpus Juris Canonici, the Liber Sextus, and the institution of the Jubilee of 1300, the first Holy Year. In 1303, an army led by his enemies Guillaume de Nogaret and Sciarra Colonna captured Boniface in Anagni, beat and imprisoned him for several days; he died shortly thereafter. |
