Nicholas IV, Pope (Italian pope, 1227-ca. 1292)
|
Note: The first Franciscan pope; he was known as a pious, pacifist friar with no ambition. He was elected to the papacy as a comprise by a hopelessly divided conclave. As pope, he relied heavily on the powerful Colonna Italian family and was involved in several political negotiations regarding Sicily, England, and France. |
