Cravan, Arthur (French poet and boxer, born 1887, disappeared 1918)
|
Note: Associated with members of what would become the Dada and Surrealist movements. He was the sole writer, editor, and publisher of the journal 'Maintenant' (1912-1915), which is considered a model for later Dadaist periodicals. He claimed to be the son of Oscar Wilde, maintained a career as a boxer: and fought Jack Johnson in Barcelona, 1916. He may be considered a progenitor of what has become performance or conceptual art. He married the painter and poet Mina Loy in 1918 and disappeared soon after off the coast of Mexico under mysterious circumstances. Attempts have been made to identify Cravan as the poet and painter Edouard Archinard, as well as a forger of Wilde manuscripts known as Dorian Hope. |
