Record Type: Person
Kim Myeongguk (Korean painter and court artist, born 1600)

Note: Korean painter of middle-class origin became a popular court painter to King Injo, who reigned from 1623 to 1650. He served as a member of the Office of Arts, and visited Japan twice during the first half of the 17th century. Kim Myeongguk was a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) in the seventeenth century. He was one of the most prominent painters of the Zhe School in the seventeenth century and excelled at Seon painting. In 1636 and 1643, he travelled to Japan as a painter with the tongsinsa diplomatic missions. There is an anecdote that his paintings were in such high demand in Japan at the time that he did not have enough time to sleep. Although he painted a variety of subjects, he excelled in paintings of Seon Buddhism, figures, and scholar's rocks. He harmonized ink and light colors well. He produced many paintings in the Zhe school style, especially in the sub-style known as "wild and heterodox." He played an important role in its development.
