Kim Si (Korean painter, 1524-1593)
|
Note: Kim Che did not pass any civil service examinations, but held honorary positions including deputy director of the the Bureau of Painting in the Office of Arts. His work was valued by his contemporaries, though most examples were destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. He painted landscapes, animals, and genre scenes derived from the Chinese Zhe school as well as the Korean literati style. Kim Si was a painter and literary figure active in the mid-Joseon period. After Kim Si became unable to serve in the government due to the political collapse of his father Kim Anro (1481-1537), he spent his life writing calligraphy, painting, and reading. His mastery of painting was evident in diverse themes like landscapes, figures, oxen, and birds and flowers. He was particularly skilled at painting landscapes in the style of An Gyeon or in the style of Zhe School. His works were important for the mid-Joseon transition to adopting the new Zhe School painting style while sustaining elements of the An Gyeon School from the early Joseon period. They exerted a great influence upon seventeenth-century painters, including Kim Myeongguk (1600-?). His nativist take on ox and bird-and-flower paintings was passed down to younger painters like his grandson Kim Sik (1579-1662). |
