Leo X, Pope (Italian pope, patron, 1475-1521)

Note: Son of Lorenzo the Magnificent and Clarice Orsini. As pope, Leo excommunicated Martin Luther in 1521, but otherwise the Reformation grew during his reign. He was a great patron of the arts in Rome, making the city a center of culture, science, and political power, although he depleted the papal treasury. He set up Greek colleges in Rome and Florence, promoted the study of Hebrew and Arabic writings, and gave strong support to printing.
