Graz, John (Swiss architect, painter, and sculptor, 1891-1980, active in Brazil)
|
Note: John Louis Graz enrolled in the architecture, decoration and design department of the School of Fine Arts of Geneva in 1908, where he was a pupil of Eugène Gilliard (1861-1921), Gabriel Vernet, and Daniel Baud-Bovy (1870-1958). He was also a disciple of Edouard Ravel (1847-1920), from whom he learned various techniques. From 1911 to 1913, while at the School of Fine Arts of Munich, he studied decoration, design, and advertising with Carl Moos (1873-1959). He won the Lissignol Scholarship twice and went to study in Spain. In 1920, he came to Brazil and, in the same year, married Regina Gomide in São Paulo. In 1923, he worked with the architect Gregori Warchavchik (1896-1972), designing and executing the decoration of residences in São Paulo, including furniture, lighting, handles, frescoes, stained glass, bathrooms and gardens. During the 1930s, he formed the Grupo 7 [Group 7] with his wife, Antônio Gomide, Elisabeth Nobling (1902-1975), Rino Levi (1901-1965), Victor Brecheret (1894-1955) and Yolanda Mohalyi (1909-1978). |
