Painter N (Attic vase painter, active ca. 539-520 BCE)
|
Note: Using the black-figure technique, Painter N decorated vases in the workshop of the potter Nikosthenes in Athens from around 540 to 520 BCE. As with most Greek vase painters, the real name of Painter N is unknown, and he is identified only by the stylistic traits of his work. Scholars named him after the first initial of Nikosthenes, the only potter for whom he apparently worked. In fact, some scholars believe that Painter N and Nikosthenes may be the same person. Painter N decorated Nikosthenic amphorai, a specialized shape made almost exclusively for the export market to Etruria. He painted these vases with vibrant scenes of athletic contests and Dionysiac revelries. |
