Archigram (English architectural group, 1960-1972)
|
Note: English architectural group, periodical, and stylistic tendency of the 1960s. The periodical began as a student publication founded by Peter Cook in 1960, and by 1964, consisted of Cook, Warren Chalk, Dennis Crompton, Ron Herron, David Greene, and Mike Webb. Most of the material illustrated in the periodical was avant-garde, using modern techniques such as photocopying, and emphasized an increased awareness of the transience and expendability of physical equipment and its direct response to human needs. Among the most well known projects include Ron Herron's "Walking Cities" project, (1964) which comprised large urban structures set in motion on mechanical legs. The high-point of their success was marked by their winning a major international competition in 1970 for an underground entertainment center in Monte Carlo. These images were reproduced in other magazines worldwide and it became the model for other radical-formalist movements such as the Italian Archizoom group. While Archigram inspired megastructures, in the end none of the projects were executed, and in the changing intellectual and financial climate of the 1970s, a loss of confidence in large-scale planning saw its influence wane. As a result, the group disbanded in 1972. The true influence of Archigram began in earnest after its demise, as some of its ideas and formalist tendencies became absorbed into the mainstream of late modern architecture. Architects such as Richard Rodgers and Norman Foster have acknowledge its contribution to the "High-Tech" movement of the mid-1970s. |
