Edwards, Melvin (American sculptor, 1937-2026)

Note: Melvin Edwards is an African-American sculptor who was born in Houston, Texas. His work combined abstraction with historical themes derived from the African diaspora, and he often included found objects in his welded metal constructions. He was educated at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. He was the first African American sculptor to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
