Coolidge, Cassius Marcellus (American painter and cartoonist, 1844-1934)
|
Note: Coolidge is best known as the creator of the dogs-playing-poker genre of painting. He also portrayed dogs doing other human activities such as attending dances and baseball games. His work was used in promotion giveaways by cigar companies, and most notably by the advertising firm of Brown & Bigelow, who made the images widely known through the distribution of calendar and prints. Coolidge's art is often seen as an example of kitsch and Americana. |
