Nikias (Greek painter, active late 4th century BCE)
|
Note: Along with Euphranor, in whose workshop he trained, Euphranor was among the foremost members of the 4th-century BCE Attic school of painting. The main technical advance ascribed to Nikias involved his treatment of light and shade. Pausanias wrote that he was the best of all his contemporaries in painting from life. He preferred the complex compositions of naval or cavalry battles although he was also renowned for his paintings of animals, especially dogs. He was the son of Nikomedes and the master of Omphalion. |
