Desgodets, Antoine (French architect and theorist, 1653-1728)

Note: Desgodets spent two years in Rome on a royal bursary recording ancient architecture and upon his return published Les Edifices antiques de Rome dessinés et mesurés très exactement in 1682. Reprinted in 1799, this work is considered the beginning of modern scientific archaeology. In 1700 the Académie asked him to prepare drawings of the different orders of architecture to be used as the basis for large-scale models. He did not finish, but did write a Traité des ordres d'architecture which he completed in 1711, but which was not published. In 1718 he attained the First Class of the Académie and in 1719 was made Professor of Architecture there. Three manuscripts of his volumes of lectures survive. The use of Babuty in his name appears to be based on an error compounded by use. All works in his lifetime, including those engraved by his own hand and t.p.s of works he published or supervised the publication of, use Desgodetz, Antoine. French reference works use the final "s" although he did not. As a writer/architect, the French "s" form must be accepted, but not the Babuty, which comes from a title published well after his death (which the BN has entered under the compound form AND the single form). The title (Disseration ... ) is "Redigée par ... " in 1763. He died in 1728. It is likely it is a relative who makes use of a well-known family name. There is a record showing "Babuty fils" in an imprint to substantiate this supposition. Modern scholarship seems to favor in English Desgodetz. He was a scholar and professor more known for scholarship than architecture (plans but no known buildings). No "s" found in his works. Planat quotes an appt. doc. using the "s". French architect.
