Record Type: Person
Master of the Unicorn Hunt (French designer of tapestries and illuminator, active ca. 1480-1510)

Note: Noted as the principal designer of a set of tapestries in the Metropolitan Museum Cloisters, New York, representing the pursuit and capture of a unicorn. While the tapestries were probably woven in Brussels, the style and provenance suggest that the Master was of French origin. Because the initials AE are found on the tapestries, they have been connect with the patron Queen Anne of Brittany, although this is not firmly established. The style of the master is seen in other tapestries, woodcuts in printed books, and stained glass, although it is uncertain whether he designed these works or if his style was so highly influential that it was copied by other artists. His style suggests that he studied with the Master of Coëtivy, an illuminator and tapestry designer who was active in the Loire Valley region.
