Gill, Robert (English photographer and officer, 1804-1875 or 1879, active in India)

Note: Gill was a member of the Madras Army. In 1846, he was commissioned by the Madras Government to make oil paintings of deteriorating frescos in the Buddhist caves of Ajanta. By the 1850s he was supplied with a camera, and continued to document the caves of Ajanta and Ellora. By the mid 1850s, Gill became a correspondent with the Journal of the Photographic Society of Bombay. He photographed rock-cut temples in Western India in 1862, and also produced stereoscopic views. These photographs were published in James Ferguson's "The rock-cut temples of India" (London, 1864).
