Phiale Painter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 450-420 BCE)
|
Note: The Phiale Painter worked in red-figure on a wide variety of vessel shapes as well as in white-ground on funerary lekythoi. He is noted for his technical ability and for his spacious compositions on white-ground calyx kraters, where the white background and polychromy seem to approximate the appearance of now-lost wall and panel paintings. His subject matter, however, does not come from monumental models but instead seems to come from a personal interest in theater. |
