Master of the Parlement de Paris (French or Flemish painter, active ca. 1450-ca. 1495)
|
Note: Only two paintings in the world are recognized as having been painted by the anonymous artist known as the Master of the Parlement de Paris. This painter was named after the large fifteenth-century altarpiece made for the Parlement de Paris, now in the Louvre museum. The other painting is the Crucifixion in the J. Paul Getty Museum. Nothing at all is known about the artist's life, but, based on his artistic technique, scholars believe that he was trained in the style of Rogier van der Weyden. Like Rogier, he used rich oil colors, tightly interlocked his monumental figures across the foreground in a rhythmic design, and gave his figures swaying postures and elegant, fluttering draperies. Though he worked for at least one French client, he may have been Flemish, like Rogier. Comment on works: religious |
