Barvitius, Viktor (Czech painter and art historian, 1834-1902)
|
Note: Began his studies at the Prague Academy of Visual Arts at age 15. Lived in Paris and Cernay-la-Ville from 1865-1867 where he worked among members of the Barbizon school. During this period he developed a more painterly style, expanded the physical scale of his work, and focused on depicting city life. Upon his return to Prague he ceased painting and devoted himself to art history, writing the first expanded study of Czech painting of the 19th century. He also published an essay on the history of Czech artists' associations, and a catalog of a Prague picture gallery where he served as inspector 1877-1893. He was the brother of Antonín Barvitius (1823-1901). |
