Gower, Henry de (Welsh bishop, designer, and patron, ca. 1278-1347)
|
Note: Henry de Gower was a bishop, scholar and patron of aristocratic descent; his conception, organization and financing of ecclesiastical building projects in medieval Wales is considered unsurpassed. He entered University of Oxford in about 1295 and studied at Merton College, graduating as doctor of civil law in 1320 and doctor of canon law in 1322. He served as Chancellor of Oxford from 1322 to 1325. Gower became Canon of St David's in Pembrokeshire in about 1314 and Archdeacon in 1319 or 1323. In 1328 he was elected Bishop. Although some of his statues survive, Gower is best remembered as a patron of architecture; he was often known as the 'Welsh Wykeham.' He restored a number of episcopal residences, including his own palace (now destroyed) at Llanddewi, Gower. He also reconstructed Swansea Castle and added to the episcopal palace at Lamphey; at both places he had incorporated the arcaded parapet that was a kind of trademark element for him. In addition to his extensive works at St David's, in 1332 he founded the large hospital of the Blessed David, Swansea. He is buried in St David's Cathedral in a tomb he himself designed. |
