Gutfreund, Otto (Czech sculptor, 1889-1927)
|
Note: Czech sculptor was the son of a Jewish family and graduated from the school of ceramics in Bechyne. He continued his studies at the Prague School of Industrial Arts, and later with E.A. Bourdelle in Paris. From 1910 he eagerly took up developing trends in European modernism, and began creating more expressionistic works. He progressed to analytical and synthetic cubism, and began writing theoretical texts. Gutfreund is considered one of the first to apply cubist theories to sculpture. He was a founding member of the Group of Plastic Artists, and remained faithful to it even after most other members had returned to the Mánes Association of Plastic Artists. His experiences in the First World War caused him to abandon cubism and work in a more naturalistic style derived from folk art. Czech sculptor. |
