Berko, Ferenc (American photographer, born 1916)

Note: In 1921, Berko and his family emigrated to Germany from Hungary and in 1927, he began photographing in Dresden. Berko moved to London in 1932 and from 1935 to 1936 made documentary films there. From 1936 to 1938 he was a freelance photographer and filmmaker. From 1938 to 1939 Berko was the director of photography for Bhavani Productions in Bombay and in 1939, in collaboration with the British Advertising Agency, he opened a commercial portrait studio in Bombay which operated until 1944. In 1942 and 1943, Berko made documentary films on aspects of Indian army life. From 1944 to 1947, Berko was the director at the British Directorate of Kinematography. In 1947, Berko became a British citizen and moved to the United States. From 1947 to 1948 Berko was an instructor in photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. From 1947 to 1952, Berko made short films in color. He moved to Aspen, Colorado in 1949 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1969.
