Isabel Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain (Spanish royalty, 1566-1633)
|
Note: Isabella, Infanta of Spain and Archduchess of Austria, 1566-1633, ruled the Spanish Netherlands with her husband, Archduke Albert, from 1598 to 1621. After Albert's death in 1621 sovereignty of the Spanish Netherlands reverted to Spain, and Isabella ruled as governor of the country for her nephew, King Philip IV of Spain. After the death of her consort, she joined the Third Order of St. Francis, and for the rest of her life wore the habit of a Poor Clare in sign of mourning.; Peter Paul Rubens' depiction of Isabella as a Poor Clare became the official state portrait until her death. |
